My schedule has had only one cycle. So I, in very poor judgment, declare it a resounding success!
Today's illustration-- The bad? Everything. The good? She, the person it's based on, will probably brutally kick my ass next time we hang out after she sees this.
Impressionism is probably my personal favorite painting style.
Now-- all great movements are out to change or destroy some sort of oppressive establishment. Impressionism changed the art world from it's strive towards photorealism to a larger variety of expression. It was during this time that 'The Salon', a gallery held in Paris, showcased a variety of Artists' paintings. To succeed as an artist, you had to be accepted by The Salon. To be accepted by The Salon, you had to paint in a Neo-Classical style. Neo-Classical paintings focused on mythology, religion, or historical events. Paintings were also produced in each individual's studio, as anything outdoors would be limited to sketching and/or watercolors.
Technology would help change the face of a culture establishment. Photography was blossoming commercially as studios were opening up rapidly around the world. Photos capture moments in time. Photographs could do in minutes what it took a skilled portrait painters years of practice to accomplish. Now painters could try different things, to see what they could produce that a camera could not. Improvements in oil paints, would allow them to now take oil paints outside. Allowing for rapid painting and trying to capture the scene, rather much afterwards in a studio.
The use of brush strokes, colors, subject matter, and light was revolutionary. Monet and Degas I think are most influential in my drawings and when I try to photograph. Though, thanks to Justin, I was recently reminded of the brilliance of Gustave Caillebotte.
When I do colorings like this, it's because I'm still experimenting with my brushes and coloring methods. It would be easy for me to claim I do it in this fashion because of my love of Impressionism, but really it's because my coloring is still very crude.
Random link that's infuriating, but makes me strive to improve:
For those who work in or have used Adobe Illustrator, click here. Yeah, they're made entirely out of vectors.
